Dr. Anne Rimoin

Dr. Anne W. Rimoin is Professor of Epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and holds the Gordon–Levin Endowed Chair in Infectious Diseases and Public Health. She directs the UCLA Center for Global and Immigrant Health and is internationally recognized for her work on emerging infectious diseases, global health security, and One Health approaches to pandemic preparedness.

Since 2002, Dr. Rimoin has worked in close partnership with collaborators in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where she established the UCLA–DRC Health Research and Training Program alongside the Kinshasa School of Public Health and the National Institute of Biomedical Research. This long-standing collaboration has generated foundational studies on the epidemiology of Mpox in the post-smallpox era, long-term immunity among Ebola survivors, and durability of Ebola vaccine responses in frontline workers. Ongoing research focuses on vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) in children and immunization uptake among healthcare, frontline, and veterinary health workers. She is also co-leading studies of zoonotic spillover risks at the human–animal–agricultural interface in urban and rural DRC settings.

In the United States, Dr. Rimoin is leading research on Mpox vaccine effectiveness in high-risk populations in Los Angeles. She also directs studies examining risk perception and attitudes toward vaccination and other mitigation strategies for emerging pathogens among healthcare workers, first responders, and veterinary professionals in both rural and urban settings.

Her broader research portfolio includes work on high-consequence zoonotic threats such as avian influenza, Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), and Nipah virus. She collaborates with international teams in Turkey and the Czech Republic on CCHF ecology and transmission, and partners with dairy producers and agricultural communities in the U.S. to assess zoonotic risk and inform One Health surveillance strategies.

A trusted voice in science communication, Dr. Rimoin is frequently featured in national and international media and has appeared as an expert on CNN, MSNBC, BBC, NPR, KTLA and major print outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The Los Angeles Times. She has been featured in several public service campaigns and regularly translates complex scientific findings for the public, policymakers, and global health stakeholders.

Dr. Rimoin received her BA from Middlebury College, MPH from UCLA, and PhD from Johns Hopkins University. She began her career in global health as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Benin, West Africa. In recognition of her scientific and public health impact, she has received numerous honors, including the Society for Epidemiologic Research Roger Detels Infectious Disease Award, the Middlebury Alumni Achievement Award, the Johns Hopkins Global Achievement Award, and election as a Fellow of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
